Suddenly! Container collapse injuring people! Port suspends empty container operations!
According to foreign media reports, at around 6:40 am on November 25th, an accident occurred at Terminal 3 of the Port of Malacca in Singapore. A stacked empty container collapsed and hit a forklift, causing injury to the driver. Currently, PSA Singapore has suspended all empty container handling operations at the yard.
The Singapore Civil Defense Force stated that they received a call at 6:55 local time and dispatched an ambulance to the scene. According to CCTV footage circulating on social media, a forklift was lifting a container when the accident occurred. When the forklift was reversing, five stacked containers suddenly collapsed, and one of them hit the forklift cab, causing the cab to tilt backwards, and the driver subsequently fell to the ground.
Subsequently, the 37 year old forklift driver was sent to the National University Hospital for treatment and was admitted conscious. It is reported that the driver suffered superficial injuries to his head and body, and his condition is currently stable. He is currently hospitalized for observation.
The Singapore Ministry of Human Resources has ordered the suspension of empty container handling in the area and conducted a comprehensive investigation. At the same time, the Ministry of Human Resources requires PSA to conduct a "safety pause", which means temporarily suspending daily operations, reviewing and improving the safety and health management system and work processes in the workplace.
The Ministry of Human Resources emphasizes that "as a general safety measure, containers must be placed according to the prescribed stacking pattern and height to prevent tipping accidents
Normally, empty containers are handled by forklifts, while heavy containers loaded with goods are lifted by large cranes. This accident once again highlights the importance of container stacking and operational safety.
PSA will conduct detailed investigations and safety reviews in accordance with the requirements of the Ministry of Human Resources to ensure that future operations are safer and more reliable. At present, the cause of the accident is under further investigation.
We also remind shippers and freight forwarders that if there are plans to pick up containers at the port in the near future, they need to pay attention to the port dynamics in a timely manner to avoid affecting transportation!
